a facilitator's playlist - PART 1

Writer's picture: C HallC Hall

Through my work, I’ve designed meetings and facilitated conversations connecting national and local organizations around health equity approaches and strategies to advance community health.

Some consultants talk about the tools they use in their toolbox. I love listening to music, so my 'tools are more of a playlist made up of genres that apply to a few facilitator roles, competencies, and strategies.

My work is not just about facilitating dialogues; it's about creating a melody of ideas that resonate with the rhythm of community health advancement strategies. It's about ensuring that every voice is heard, every note is played, and every beat is in sync with the overall objective of achieving health equity. Below is part of my playlist: a collection of techniques, strategies, and methodologies I use to navigate my work.

🎸 Rock & Roll: get the group rocking ’n’ rolling with an opening Ice Breaker. If the group is new, start with something light and funny. As you build trust, create questions that relate to the group that can bring out deeper feelings, thoughts, and insights.

☀️ Inspirational: a welcoming, positive attitude has a huge impact on meeting outcomes. It sets the meeting’s tone and mood for bringing out everyone’s best ideas, while encouraging an open and collaborative environment.

😎 Reggae: establish a good rhythm for topics discussed at your meeting. Create a positive and rhythmic flow for any consensus or decision-making processes.

🤠 Country: I’m actually neutral to country music! A golden rule for a facilitator is to model neutrality. A good facilitator maintains an objective, unbiased stance during discussions.

These 'tracks' from my playlist are not just theoretical concepts but practical strategies I've used in real-life scenarios to facilitate meaningful conversations around health equity approaches.

Stay 'tuned' for Part 2 of facilitator playlist genres! Until then, keep facilitating, keep learning, and keep making a difference in your communities.
